Mompiche is a fairly small and quiet town in Esmeraldas. It has over 7 kilometers of coastline with plenty of breaks up and down the beach. There are plenty of beginner waves to be found on the inside here, but the real advanced waves can be found at La Punta and Portete Island. La Punta is an awesome left-hand point break that can go well overhead. Without much crowds, you’ll find a long barelling wave with the right conditions. It’s a bit rocky and reefy below, but nothing too gnarly.

Montañita is the most active surf town in Ecuador. The town really gets going at night, with plenty of nightlife available. The point (La Punta) produces some awesome rights. It can get up to 3m tall, and is fast and hollow. There’s quite a bit of rock and reef below, especially near the takeoff point. In addition to being a fantastically formed wave, it can provide rides of over 200 meters!

Punta Carnero

surfing in ecuador

Located near Solinas down in southern Ecuador, Punta Carnero is a punchy beach break. They aren’t long waves, but they are frequently in the 6-8 foot range. There aren’t a lot of crowds, and the waves are super consistent here. One of the reason it’s so popular is its relative proximity to Guayaquil. It can get strong currents, as many beach breaks have, but it usually isn’t a problem for confident surfers.
