The Best Big Waves
Nuquí
Guachalito
Juanchaco
Nuquí
In the remote area of Chocó, Nuquí is one of the best surf spots in general in Colombia. There are a ton of breaks here, some awesome surf camps, and beautiful jungles. The waves at Pico de Loro, Terco, and Juan Tornillo are probably the best advanced waves in all of Colombia. These are big, hollow waves that get pumping with the SW swells from the Pacific. The area itself is remote, and requires a boat or plane to get into.
Guachalito
Located just south of Nuquí, Guachalito is a bit more developed. You’ll find hotels and surf schools here, and waves for everyone. It’s a big exposed beach break. When the swells come in from the west or southwest, it can get pumping here. Although you’re still surrounded by nature, there are more options for traditional hotels and accommodations than in Nuquí.
Juanchaco
Finally, there’s Juanchaco. It’s a right that breaks off a reef, and relies on north or northwest swells. It can be a bit fnicky, requiring the correct swell and wind direction. But when it fires, it fires. You’ll find powerful hollow overhead waves. It works at any tide, and is really best for advanced surfers. It has different sections that keep even experienced surfers challenged.
